Southern Highlands

(124 km south west of Sydney)

Trip duration: One day or longer.

On the road
Just 1.5 hours south west of Sydney, via the Hume Highway is the Southern Highlands. It is an easy day trip from Sydney or you can spend several days in the Highlands exploring. Return to Sydney via the Hume Highway or drive to the coast (via the IIIawarra Highway) and return to Sydney past the south coast beaches of the Illawarra region.

Must see

The Southern Highlands region is full of surprises with colourful gardens, antiques, Australian history, rolling green hillsides, plunging waterfalls and marvellous bushwalks. Enjoy the variety of places to stay, fabulous food and superb country hospitality of this lush, rural area.

CAMPBELLTOWN

Campbelltown is now a satellite town of Sydney and also a dormitory suburb. Home of the legend Fisher’s ghost, the ghost of a murdered convict is alleged to have pointed to the place where his body was subsequently found and as a result the murderer was brought to justice.

Mittagong Jellore LookoutMittagong is the gateway to the Southern Highlands. The area has many gracious old buildings. Visit Victoria House for Australia’s largest needlework display. Interesting Mt Gibraltar, once volcanic, has picnic facilities, walking tracks and spectacular views.

Berrima is the best remaining example of a small 1830s Australian village. Visit the convict built goal and courthouse or some of the many galleries, antique and craft shops. Stop for a drink and cook your own steak at the old Surveyor General Inn.

Moss Vale is an industrial town just south of Bowral. Throsby Park House, built between 1834 and 1837, is a fine old home built by the area’s first settlers. Moss Vale is a good place to explore Morton National Park, one of the largest national parks in NSW, with many bushwalks to spectacular lookouts and waterfalls, particularly Fitzroy Falls.
