Adelaide is a city known for its festivals, arts, fine architecture, live music and museums. North Terrace is the cultural heart of Adelaide where you can take in the South Australia Museum, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Migration Museum, the State Library and war memorials all on foot. Nearby Elder Park on the Banks of River Torrens offers bikes and paddle-boats for hire. Cross the river to Adelaide Oval and catch a game of cricket in summer or take a tour. Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institue is dedicated to visual and performing arts. Around the corner you can browse Rundle Street’s boutiques.

10 minutes walk (or a quick tram ride away) is Adelaide Central Market – a bounty of fresh produce for the sampling. If you’re feeling puckish, Rundle Street and Gouger Street are two of Adelaide’s restaurant strips.

Catch the tram to Glenelg Beach to explore the jetty, relax on the beach, or join a tour to swim with the dolphins.

Further east is historic Port Adelaide where you can learn about the city’s history and join a river cruise to see the dolphin sanctuary.

Campervan Day Trips from Adelaide

Just 30 minutes east of Adelaide’s centre, across sweeping plains are the rolling green Adelaide Hills. The region is dotted with charming villages, Hahndorf being the most famous, making it a perfect campervan outing.

For wine lovers, the Clare Valley and Barossa wine regions offer cool climate wines. And where there’s good wine there’s good food. You’ll find butchers and bakers and artisanal beer makers, cheeses and fruits and everything you need for the perfect picnic in stunning countryside.

Where to Stay in your Campervan

Levi Caravan Park is quiet, leafy, close to the city, and well-connected with public transport. Adelaide Holiday Park is within walking distance of Adelaide’s centre, and Adelaide Shores Big4 Caravan Park is right on the beach.

Road Trips from Adelaide

Adelaide to Melbourne Drive

Distance: 1,065 km (coastal) 1,154 km (including the Grampians)

Drive Time: 13 hr 30 min (Coastal) 14 hr 30 min (including the Grampians)

If you haven’t already spent time in McLaren Vale it’s a good place to start your campervan tour to Melbourne. Here there are wineries, stunning countryside, and delicious food.

If you have time to add an additional 349 km (6 hours and 20 minutes) to your campervan journey, a visit to Kangaroo Island is worth the detour. Kangaroos are not the only wildlife. Echidnas, wombats, emus, koalas and seals have made this beautiful island their home.

Back on the mainland tour Fleurieu Peninsula and its wineries, galleries, and rolling green hills. Sample the restaurants, local produce and fresh seafood. Stop in at Strathalbyne for some antique shopping, before rounding the bay to Coorong National Park - a tapestry of lagoons, sand dunes, and wetlands. Stay on the limestone coast for 17 mile Beach and the pretty seaside village of Robe before heading inland for Naracoorte Caves, an underground labyrinth of delicate calcite formations and 350,000 year-old World Heritage listed fossils. A little further and you’re in Coonawarra wine country.

From here you can detour inland to include the Grampians or continue on the coast to the charming historic town of Penola and Mt Gambier with its sapphire blue lake.

Both tour routes reunite in Port Fairy with its quaint whitewashed cottages. This marks the beginning of the Great Ocean Road, one of the most spectacular scenic drives in Australia. You’ll take in the Twelve Apostles, the ancient forests of the Otway National Park, the coastal towns of Apollo Bay and Lorne, Bells Beach famous among surfers, and Geelong before reaching Melbourne.
