After spending time at the Gold Coast where you will find excellent campervan-friendly caravan parks, you will journey south along the legendary Pacific Coast, Australia’s top campervan tour. Venture off the highway and explore some of Australia’s most beautiful tourist drives. It’s a paradise for swimming, fishing, surfing, dolphin-watching and boating. You pass through dozens of national parks, which offer diverse landscapes, wildlife, rewarding hikes and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Highlights include the colourful hippy town of Nimbin and Byron Bay, a pleasant blend of barefoot beach culture and cashed-up hippies that has several good places in which to stay in your campervan. In October and November, detour through Grafton when the streets are strewn with the purple blossoms of Jacaranda trees. Pose in front of the big banana at Coffs Harbour before heading to Bellingen, an alternative lifestyle town of misty mornings, a healthy bat population, crystal clear rivers and poetic place names like The Promised Land, Die Happy and Never Never River.
Myall Lakes National Parks is an extravagantly pretty mosaic of lakes, rivers, rainforests and secluded coastlines. It’s rich in birdlife and the changing hues of sunset and sunrise are reflected in the still water surfaces. Kayak, boat, hike, swim and spot migrating humpback whales.
Head inland to the Hunter Valley to visit Australia’s oldest wineries for some attitude-free wine tastings (novices welcome!) before heading to Sydney. From here you can continue on to Melbourne or Adelaide.
