The river city of Brisbane has something to offer everyone. It’s a foot friendly city with river ferries, a good train system, and plenty of bike paths should you hire a bike from the botanic gardens. Southbank is a perfect place to park your campervan and swim, relax on the sand, picnic, sample local restaurants, visit the Museum of Science and Gallery of Modern Art, and watch the sun set. Explore the restored wooden houses of Paddington amidst the cafes and antique stores or take a XXXX Brewery tour. Metro Arts is a creative hub for artists while Riverstage provides free live music.

3 Day Trips from Brisbane in a campervan

  1. Just 25 kilometres from Brisbane Central Business District are the charming bayside villages of Moreton Bay providing restaurants, cafes, a winery with stunning bay views, art galleries, and seaside picnic spots. Between June and October watch for pods of whales playing off-shore.
  2. Moreton Island is a nature lover’s day trip. A sand island, like Fraser, it has crystal clear lakes, forests, and massive sand dunes perfect for sand tobogganing. You can also hand feed wild dolphins.
  3. Another day trip which takes in rainforest walks, cute towns and amazing views is the Mount Tamborine tour that ends at the Gold Coast or loops back to Brisbane.
  4. D'Aguilar State Forest is a short distance into the hills behind Brisbane. It offers some beautiful lush rainforest walks and campervan-friendly camping at Archer Campground.
  5. North Stradbroke Island has plenty to do. Hang out with the wildlife, snorkel with the marine life, surf the sand dunes, visit the excellent local art gallery, eat fresh seafood, walk the North Gorge Coastal walk, or swim in a tea-stained lake.

2 Road Trips from Brisbane in a campervan

Brisbane to Airlie Beach

Distance: 1,118 km
Drive Time: 12 hr 15 min
Tour Time: 4 – 8 days

Head north passed the seemingly endless beaches of the Sunshine Coast calling in at beautiful Noosa Beach and its sophisticated coastal town. At Rainbow Beach you can park the campervan and join a tour to world Heritage listed Fraser Island to enjoy freshwater lakes, clear forest streams, sweeping beaches, rolling sand dunes, and bountiful wildlife, especially the island’s iconic dingoes.

Back on the road, watch turtles lay their eggs at Mon Repos beach near Bundaberg, or spot migrating whales at Hervey Bay. Call in at the picturesque town of 1770 where you can park your campervan and tour to pristine Lady Musgrave Island or Lady Elliot Island for some spectacular reef snorkeling and diving. The waters are crystal clear and the temperatures sublime. Dolphins, turtles, nesting birds, manta rays and humpback whales are common sights here.

Near the coastal village of Yepoon you can explore the Capricorn Caves, then enjoy the beaches and wildlife of Cape Hillsborough National Park before passing through the verdant sugar cane fields of Mackay to reach Airlie Beach. From Airlie you can continue on to Townsville or Cairns.

Brisbane to Sydney

Distance: 990 km (with detours)
Drive Time: 11 hr
Tour Time: 4 – 8 days

After spending time at the Gold Coast where you will find excellent campervan-friendly caravan parks, you will journey south along the legendary Pacific Coast, Australia’s top campervan tour. Venture off the highway and explore some of Australia’s most beautiful tourist drives. It’s a paradise for swimming, fishing, surfing, dolphin-watching and boating. You pass through dozens of national parks, which offer diverse landscapes, wildlife, rewarding hikes and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Highlights include the colourful hippy town of Nimbin and Byron Bay, a pleasant blend of barefoot beach culture and cashed-up hippies that has several good places in which to stay in your campervan. In October and November, detour through Grafton when the streets are strewn with the purple blossoms of Jacaranda trees. Pose in front of the big banana at Coffs Harbour before heading to Bellingen, an alternative lifestyle town of misty mornings, a healthy bat population, crystal clear rivers and poetic place names like The Promised Land, Die Happy and Never Never River.

Myall Lakes National Parks is an extravagantly pretty mosaic of lakes, rivers, rainforests and secluded coastlines. It’s rich in birdlife and the changing hues of sunset and sunrise are reflected in the still water surfaces. Kayak, boat, hike, swim and spot migrating humpback whales.

Head inland to the Hunter Valley to visit Australia’s oldest wineries for some attitude-free wine tastings (novices welcome!) before heading to Sydney. From here you can continue on to Melbourne or Adelaide.
