Gold Coast and Around

‘Famous for Fun’ is the Gold Coast slogan and it applies to all ages. The gold Coast is a theme park extravaganza. Things to do in Gold Coast

7 Gold Coast Day Trips

If you need an antidote to the liveliness of the Gold Coast, escape to the lush forested hinterland or an undeveloped sand island.

  1. For your forest fix, the UNESCO World Heritage listed Lamington National Park is an ancient, often misty, forest rich in wildlife.
  2. Springbrook National Park has stunning viewpoints across the forests and rolling hills to the ocean and city of the Gold Coast. The twin falls walk takes you behind two waterfalls and through moss covered gorges and monolithic trees. The Best of All Lookout (yep, that's it's name) is breathtaking if there are no low lying clouds. The path to the lookout has ancient gnarled trees covered in moss. The Natural Bridge walk takes in a waterfall that flows into a cave.
  3. The culturally rich hamlets of Tamborine Mountain are an easy day trip away on winding country lanes. The Mount Tamborine National Park has waterfalls, glow worm caves, and walks.
  4. For your island fix, South Stradbroke Island (or ‘South Straddie’ to her mates) can be reached by charter boat, ferry and water taxi from several departure points along the Gold Coast. On the island you will find a luxury resort, Tippler’s Café (licensed), two campgrounds, plenty of sea birds, wallabies, scrub and beaches that you’ll have all to yourself. And not a car to be seen. Or heard. The only sounds here are waves crashing on the shore, wind whistling through the spinifex, and the cry of gulls.
  5. Byron Bay is a short drive south where you can sip chai lattes, eat vegan rice bowls, and take in the surf and hippie vibe of the place. The lighthouse walk is beautiful and worth the effort. From the many boutiques you can grab some great looking beach gear. Not far away is the Crystal Castle Gardens, beautiful and extensive gardens with large amethyst crystals.
  6. Mount Warning is a volcanic peak that offers a challenging summit climb through rainforest and amazing views from the top.
  7. The Tweed Valley is a short drive south, adjacent to Coolangatta on the NSW border. Stand Up paddle-boarding down the Tweed River and snorkeling with sea turtles are fun things to do. For more information read our article 11 things to do in Coolangatta and Tweed Heads.
  8. Gold Coast Caravan Parks

We have a complete list of the most highly-rated and well-located campervan friendly Gold Coast caravan parks in which to stay. Some are family friendly and some are quiet. Some are near the theme parks and some are right on the beach. There's a place to suit everyone.

Campervan Road Trips from the Gold Coast

Gold Coast to Airlie Beach

Distance: 1,198 km

Drive Time: 13 h

Tour Time: 4 – 8 days

After visiting Brisbane, head north passed the seemingly endless beaches of the Sunshine Coast calling in at beautiful Noosa Beach and its sophisticated coastal town. At Rainbow Beach you can park your campervan and join a tour to world Heritage listed Fraser Island to enjoy freshwater lakes, clear forest streams, sweeping beaches, rolling sand dunes, and bountiful wildlife, especially the island’s iconic dingoes.

Watch turtles lay their eggs at Mon Repos beach near Bundaberg, or spot migrating whales at Hervey Bay. Call in at the picturesque town of 1770 where you can tour to pristine Lady Musgrave Island or Lady Elliot Island for some spectacular reef snorkeling and diving. The waters are crystal clear and the temperatures sublime. Dolphins, turtles, nesting birds, manta rays and humpback whales are common sights here.

Near the coastal village of Yepoon you can explore the Capricorn Caves, then enjoy the beaches and wildlife of Cape Hillsborough National Park before winding through the verdant sugar cane fields of Mackay to reach Airlie Beach. From here you can add on the Airlie Beach to Townsville drive and the Townsville to Cairns drive.

Gold Coast to Sydney

Distance: 900 km (with detours)

Drive Time: 10 hr

Tour Time: 4 – 8 days

Travel south along the legendary Pacific Coast, Australia’s top touring drive. Venture off the highway and explore some of Australia’s most beautiful tourist drives. It’s a paradise for swimming, fishing, surfing, dolphin-watching and boating. You pass through dozens of national parks, which offer diverse landscapes, wildlife, rewarding hikes and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Highlights include the colourful hippy town of Nimbin and Byron Bay, a pleasant blend of barefoot beach culture and cashed-up hippies that is worth a stay in your campervan. In October and November, detour through Grafton when the streets are strewn with the purple blossoms of Jacaranda trees. Pose in front of the big banana at Coffs Harbour before heading to Bellingen, an alternative lifestyle town of misty mornings, a healthy bat population, crystal clear rivers and poetic place names like The Promised Land and Never Never River.

Myall Lakes National Parks is an extravagantly pretty mosaic of lakes, rivers, rainforests and secluded coastlines. It’s rich in birdlife and the changing hues of sunset and sunrise are reflected in the still water surfaces. Kayak, boat, hike, swim and spot migrating humpback whales.

Head inland to the Hunter Valley to visit Australia’s oldest wineries for some attitude-free wine tastings (novices welcome!) before heading to Sydney.
